The Towpath Review & March Update

The Towpath – A Review

I was swamped, but my PR guy, Henry Roi (the hardest-working man west of the East), tossed The Towpath onto my desk and told me I’d like it. He was right.

From page one, Jonathan Walter delivers a time-bending, pulse-pounding thriller that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. It kicks off with a nail-biting pirate battle, and before you know it, a kid on a bike stumbles across a medallion—only to find himself in the crosshairs of a ruthless, time-traveling warrior mother, hellbent on rewriting history.

The prose is razor-sharp, crackling like an electric fence in the rain. The story has a cinematic quality, making every musket blast and knife fight feel visceral. But what lingers is the emotional depth—Walter makes you feel the stakes, the desperation, and the weight of history pressing down.

Electric and unforgettable, The Towpath is a breakneck thriller with a soul.

Final verdict? Read this. Then double-check your history books—you might have missed something. ★★★★

In other news, March is in full stride. Sad Songs from an Old Goth in a Tree is out, and The Sun Also Rises on Cthulhu launches April 1, drawing a lot of interest. That means plenty of interviews, podcasts, and videos in the coming months.

My new book in development, The Hunger Below, is proving wildly popular with the 900 beta readers I’ve gathered—yes, I’ve unlocked teaching my book in school for another story. It worked wonders for Amos the Amazing a few years ago with the university cross-cultural studies crowd, and now we’re diving into the 1983 version of this one.

What’s next? Expanding the larger story, with the goal of finishing the first draft by summer. I may even release the full short story version next week.

Stay tuned.

I also had a great video call with my friend Bob Rivenbark, author of The Cloud. Between my dad’s visit to China, the Spring Festival holiday, a minor gym injury, and all the excitement, it took us a while to make it happen—but it was well worth it. Bob is a storyteller with a wealth of fascinating tales, many of which would interest writers of all stripes. We dug into influences, ideas, Hollywood adaptations, and transmedia franchise development, along with plenty of other insights. I have a feeling we’ll be doing that again soon. I expect to post some clips this week and will post the whole thing soon.
